My Top 3 Simple Self Care Practices
My mission is to show women that all bodies are beautiful and worthy of their love and the love of others. One of the best ways to assert that for yourself is to take time for self care. Self care is the act of caring for yourself. Sounds so simple, and yet it is so difficult for us women. Many of us were raised to put everyone else’s needs and comfort before their own. Even if you weren’t raised that way, it’s all over every type of media. So, to combat that asinine notion, I’ve put together my top 5 favorite acts of self care.
1) Exercise. When I am operating at my highest potential, I am exercising regularly. It gets all of the juices in your body flowing, keeping your blood pumping to all of your cells, building muscle and burning calories. It doesn’t have to be anything over the top. Exercise can be a simple as taking a brisk afternoon walk.
2)Practicing a hobby. For me, it is incredibly difficult to keep a hobby a hobby. I have an entrepreneurial mindset and I have turned several hobbies into businesses, like photography. However, I know that it is good for my mind do something I enjoy for no reason other than that I enjoy it. My personal hobby that makes no money at all is our useless little farm. We have ducks, chickens, goats, pigs, dogs, reptiles & cats. Spending time training and taking care of my animals is one of my most favorite things to do. It makes me happy to see them happy & healthy and to build meaningful relationships with them. Your hobby can be painting, kayaking, knitting, cooking, reading etc. The key is make time to do those things that you love often.
3)Exfoliate. Exfoliating is something I know I should do and is good for my skin, but I always find myself rushing through my getting ready/shower process and skipping it for the sake of time. If you really want to take care of yourself AND feel amazing, scrub the shit out of your whole body with a exfoliating brush (my favorite) or an exfoliating body/face wash (not as effective). When my skin is glowing and radiant, I can’t help buy feel sexy & content.
All of these things are so simple, but when was the last time you exercised? What about the time before that?
And how often do your really practice your favorite hobby? Last year I was talking with my doctor about my depression and anxiety and he asked me what I like to do for fun and I told him I like camping and kayaking and he asked when was the last time I did that. I realized it had been over A YEAR since I had taken part in anything fun and that I really wasn’t spending any time with dogs outside of the basics, at that time I didn’t have horses, goats or chickens.
And when was the last time you took time in the shower or bath and really took care of yourself rather than the fastest shampoo, conditioner, shave, wash off, rinse conditioner out and done? If you’re struggling with self esteem, depression, or you’re just in a rut, I’d bet all your showers have been as fast as possible for a while.
So, take this as your sign, do something good for YOU today.
